The running man by richard bachman6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() Westlake's long-running pseudonym Richard Stark. Richard is a tribute to crime author Donald E. The pseudonym King originally selected (Gus Pillsbury) is King's maternal grandfather's name, but at the last moment King changed it to Richard Bachman. ![]() The Bachman book Thinner (1984) sold 28,000 copies during its initial run-and then ten times as many when it was revealed that Bachman was, in fact, King. King concludes that he has yet to find an answer to the "talent versus luck" question, as he felt he was outed as Bachman too early to know. He says he deliberately released the Bachman novels with as little marketing presence as possible and did his best to "load the dice against" Bachman. In his introduction to The Bachman Books, King states that adopting the nom de plume Bachman was also an attempt to make sense out of his career and try to answer the question of whether his success was due to talent or luck. ![]() He convinced his publisher, Signet Books, to print these novels under a pseudonym. King therefore wanted to write under another name, in order to increase his publication without over-saturating the market for the King "brand". ![]() At the beginning of Stephen King's career, the general view among publishers was that an author was limited to one book per year, since publishing more would be unacceptable to the public. ![]()

Julia boyd third reich6/22/2023 ![]() ![]() She begins in the Weimar period, as the Nazis began to gain adherents, and proceeds both chronologically and thematically, noting the varieties of outsiders who ventured to Germany.īoyd’s subjects range from celebrities and intellectuals to students and the English wives of German aristocrats. “It is extremely difficult,” he wrote, “to express an opinion about Germany today which is true in all respects without numerous modifications and explanations.”īoyd’s project owes something to the recent historiographical impulse to chronicle the lives and attitudes of ordinary people under Nazism. Author lucky jim6/20/2023 ![]() ![]() More than just a merciless satire of cloistered college life and stuffy post-war manners, Lucky Jim is an attack on the forces of boredom, whatever form they may take, and a work of art that at once distills and extends an entire tradition of English comic writing, from Fielding and Dickens through Wodehouse and Waugh. This is the story of Jim Dixon, a hapless lecturer in medieval history at a provincial university who knows better than most that “there was no end to the ways in which nice things are nicer than nasty ones.” Amis’s scabrous debut leads the reader through a gallery of emphatically English bores, cranks, frauds, and neurotics, with each of whom Dixon must contend in one way or another in order to hold on to his cushy academic perch and win the girl of his fancy. ![]() ![]() ![]() Regarded by many as the finest, and funniest, comic novel of the twentieth century, Lucky Jim remains as trenchant, withering, and eloquently misanthropic as when it first scandalized readers in 1954. Synopsis: A hilarious satire about college life and high class manners, this is a classic of postwar English literature. ![]() |
